Inspiring interaction design (Sony Rolly ) BY LEO WANG

Introduction: Sony Rolly is a personal electronics device combining music functions with robotic dancing. It moves along with the music downloaded from computer and bluetooth can be set. The Rolly has 1 gigabyte of memory to store tunes, and the battery can last for 5 hours straight.(4.5 hrs if use bluetooth).

Attraction: When I first found this design, I was thinking "WOW!! WHAT IS THAT!!!", because I was ATTRACTED to its unique shape. It looks COOL and "SMART". At first, I couldn't figure out what this object is, nor its functions. All I know is that its a Sony product. Later on I found some demonstration videos on Youtube, and learned how Rolly works. I choose this design for the project because it completly grabbed my attention when I first looked at it. Also it is a well designed mp3 player / toy. You can play with it while listening to your fav songs. So far there is no similar product in the market either, which makes it a "one of a kind" design.

Good Interaction Design:

Trustworthy: It looks trustworthy to me, maybe because its a SONY product, and SONY has never failed me beofre. Therefore I trust this is something worth my time. I was uncertain of the functions of this design, due to its weird shape, however I was eager and interested to find out because it looks friendly and harmless.

Appropriate: I think it's appropriate in North America, since music is a big part of our daily lives. This little robot can bring a lot of joy to us by dancing around on our tables, while playing our fav songs. Also, Rolly can be carried around easily because of its small mass. The owner can bring it to a party and show off to friends.

Smart: It's definitely a smart design, all you have to do is to press the button and Rolly will take care of the rest. If people are interested enough to buy this design, they will play with it for sure. Therefore, figuring out the rest of the buttons will be easy too (such as +/- volume, next/prev song). Rolly also has a usb plug, which makes loading songs easy for the owners.

Responsive: Rolly will response depending on the song that is playing. For example, if a song has a silent beginning for 2-3 seconds, of course Rolly will have no response to it. But if it is a Rock & Roll or Rap song, which starts at the very beginning, Rolly will response immediately.

Clever: Its a clever design, I believe. Rolly might look awkward at first, this is because we have never seen anything like it before. Yet, it looks friendly, which makes us want to discover more about it.

Ludic: Rolly is fun to play with because for every song there is a difference dance, so people can always observe the robot doing different kind of movements and spinning around. Also, the change of color of the lights on each side makes it more exciting and fun. If Rolly is being turned on at night, we can see the spinning lights from it.

Pleasureable: Its more of a functionally pleasureable kind of object. Rolly makes feel happy and loosen up from a tiring day. Play with it is a good way to waste your extra times, or when you are trying to escape from work.

Design Teams: I would say I like to participate in the brainstorming group the most, other than that I'm a good pulse taker.
