The Story of Stuff (interactive website)

http://www.storyofstuff.com/index.html

This website is designed to communicate environmental and social issues and how to live a more sustainable life through a 20min Flash. I’m caught by its clever animations and quick facts about the environment when I was researching for sustainability. It explains the big question “where did all the stuff come from and where do they end up after”. It is engaging and informative. My mouse automatically landed on the word “play” once the page was loaded.

Trustworthy: The website is professionally designed to be simple and engaging, which already provides a feeling of trust. It also has a button that says “over 1.5 million viewers!” stamped at the bottom right corner, which proudly indicates its popularity and “trustworthiness”.

Appropriate: Targeted at an English-speaking audience, and at the general public regardless of the culture, race or gender. Children can also understand its content since it is animated.

Responsive: May require some time to load since it’s Flash. It shows the amount it is loading with an indicator.

Smart: Only need to click “play” to obtain information about “stuff” we use everyday, and easy to browse. You can click on the black bar above or the pictures illustrated to skip chapters. It is extremely easy to understand the information, given with the simple animations and short facts. Demonstrates each fact visually and audibly.

Clever: It is designed to get its points across – the viewer can engage and enjoy it at the same time. It's very informative, and provokes an initiative for us to think more about sustainability.

Ludic: Although there isn’t much to experiment with, the animation is quite fun to watch.

Pleasurable: Aesthetically pleasing, nothing too crowded. Normally when we look for facts about environmental information we may be intimidated by the amount of information displayed on a page, however this website is simple and functional.
